Peter Luger has cemented itself in a special place in NY food history- and for good reason. The food itself is stellar - steaks sizzle to perfection, potatoes are flavorful and crispy, and an Apple strudel is the perfect way to end your meal. The classic steak house atmosphere only adds to the experience, along with the generous staff. Ultimately? You haven't eaten steak until you've tried Peter Luger.

Peter Luger - a restaurant that has seeped its way into popular culture for a variety of reasons. Take your pick - being one of the oldest steakhouses in NYC, the quality of the food, their (former) Michelin Star, their cash/debit only policy, the zero-star review from NYT food critic Pete Wells, or the numerous posts influencers make about it. No matter the reason why, there is no doubt PL's is super popular and a major attraction point for locals and tourists alike. I am not a big red meat eater, but wanted to experience it for myself. That being said, my friend and I decided to book a table and off we went. PL's has been around since 1887 - the original location is here in Brooklyn, and they have additional locations in Great Neck, Vegas, and Tokyo. We arrived on time for our reservation to a crowded bar area; after checking in and a short wait, we were led to our table. The restaurant is separated into different dining rooms with simple and classic decor - think dark wood tones contrasting with lightly-painted walls. There's exposed beams that are accented with tasteful chandeliers and simple wooden tables/chairs with no tablecloths. I've been to other steakhouses that are more ornate in decor, but this worked. The menu is simple - simpler than other steakhouses but the essentials were there. Probably the biggest differentiation to other spots is that when it comes to steak they only offer two types that serves multiple people - though you can get a single steak and there are a few other proteins available. We started with drinks - I got one of their craft cocktails which was quite good - smooth and tasty. The bread basket shouldn't be ignored - they serve a variety of rolls which were all soft and fresh; my favorite was the onion roll. For apps we started with the bacon and Caesar salad. The bacon was thick-cut and huge - like substantial enough that one slice is enough for one person. Even with that, it was easy to manage, not overly fatty, had great flavor, and wasn't too salty - I was honestly surprised how much I enjoyed it. The salad was also good - dressed well with a good ratio of greens to croutons to cheese. They also served these in individual plates for us which I thought was a nice touch. We of course got the steak, which was great. It was served sizzing and cooked to our request. The beef was delicious on its own, but we did pair some bites with the steak sauce that was served at the start of the meal - seriously the sauce is great, put it on everything. The steak was as good if not better than ones I've had at other houses. We also got two sides - German potatoes and creamed spinach. These were great - the potatoes had great flavor and contained crispy bits that elevated them. The creamed spinach wasn't overly creamy which I really appreciated - the greens were the star. We ended with dessert and shared the ice cream sundae - this was excellent, plenty for two and topped with their homemade whipped cream. Service was excellent - I've heard this has historically been a sore spot for PL's but from my perspective it was on point. Food came out at a good pace, and our server was really friendly - making great suggestions. Some hot tips if you're planning on going - a reservation was relatively easy to make, though I would make one a few weeks out if you're planning to go for dinner. Their steak sandwich and burger are two menu highlights, but they are only available during lunch service (until 4pm). Finally, they only take cash or debit card. Overall, I'm glad I finally experienced Peter Luger - despite the criticisms I found nothing but excellent food and great service; there's a reason this is a NYC institution. I would definitely return - next time for lunch to get that burger ;-).

Enjoyed my experience at Peter Luger. Service was amazing, had a lot of fun at our table. It wasn't too bad to make a reservation online a week before. After arrival, we had to wait ~ 10 minutes to get seated, which was reasonable. The bread that came first was amazing. We ordered bacon, cream spinach, special potatoes, and the steak for 2. I think the bacon was the best out of all. The steak was great at medium, but it wasn't astonishing that I was expecting. But overall it was great to have a enjoyable dinner in a historical setting.

Walking into Peter Luger feels like stepping back in time to classic New York. The restaurant exudes traditional steakhouse charm, with a warm, bustling atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The bar to the left as you enter serves a dual purpose: a place to enjoy a drink or to wait comfortably if your table isn't ready. The host was incredibly accommodating, even when I was delayed finding street parking (a quick note: there's no valet, so plan for street parking, which is metered until 7 PM--check the signs!). The Menu & Service The menu is straightforward, focusing on quality over quantity. Portions are generous, so if you can, come with a group of four or more to share the experience. The waitstaff are seasoned pros who guide you through the ordering process and make the whole experience seamless. Their service, including carving and serving the steak tableside, is part of what makes dining here so special. Before the food arrives, they bring out a dish of Peter Luger steak sauce, a must-try. It's not your typical steak sauce--it's tangy, rich, and the perfect complement to their signature dish. Give it a try by dipping a bite of steak into it for a burst of flavor. The Food We skipped appetizers and went straight for the Porterhouse for Two, their signature dish. Alongside, we ordered the German home fries (crispy and flavorful) and asparagus (a fresh, vibrant addition to the meal). The steak arrived sizzling on a tilted plate, with its juices pooling at one end. The waiter carved it expertly, serving the first piece with a drizzle of those rich juices. The steak itself was incredible. One side, the New York strip, had a bold, beefy flavor, while the filet side was tender and buttery. Pro tip: once you've finished the main slices, flip the bone over and cut off the meat closest to it--it's some of the best on the plate. The Cost & Experience Expect to spend around $150 per person, excluding wine and cocktails (a beer is $11 for reference). Lunch is a more affordable option, with items like their half-pound hamburger priced around $20. It's worth the splurge for a special occasion or if you're a steak lover looking for an unforgettable meal. Final Thoughts Peter Luger isn't just about the food--it's about the entire experience. From the sizzling steak to the impeccable service, this is a meal you'll savor long after it's over. It's a classic New York institution that lives up to its reputation. Five stars, and be prepared for a memorable night!

Peter Luger has been my longtime favorite steakhouse. It's by far my favorite in the city. The cuts for two are the best and ever when eating with parties larger than two, I always get the cuts for two. Each bite is perfect blend of tender meat and melt in your mouth fat. The bacon is also a must for me . I could eat a whole bacon myself. I dream about this bacon! Other good sides are the spinach and potatoes. I highly doubt that the spinach is a "healthier" option but it has a fresher taste than most creamed spinach. It has a really nice blended ratio of cream to veg. I've never been upset with the waitstaff at Luger. I wouldn't say they are overly warm but they know their stuff and get you what you need. Despite being busy, they've also never made me feel rushed to finish my meal and clear the table.

Hands down, the best steak I've ever had. The way they cook and season it brings out incredible flavor - it was absolutely perfect. The bacon and salads were equally delicious, and even the bread basket was outstanding. Service was excellent from start to finish, making the experience even more enjoyable. This is easily one of my favorite restaurants in New York, and I can't wait to return.

Peter Luger in Brooklyn offers a solid dining experience, with a few standout items that really make it memorable. I tried both the burger and the short rib sandwich--both were delicious, but the shortrib sandwich absolutely stole the show. It was flavorful and tender, well balanced in flavor, a true highlight of the meal. The burger, on the other hand, was tasty but came with a generous amount of raw onion, so if you're not a fan of that, be aware before you dig in!!! We went for a Thursday lunch without a reservation and had to wait about 45 minutes/hour for a group of five, which is a bit long, but totally manageable considering the quality of the food (and of course, being THE Peter Luger! The ambiance was great, and the service was attentive, which made for an overall pleasant experience. Definitely worth a visit if you're visiting Brooklyn!!

I have not been to Peter Luger's in probably 24 years. I still remember, however, the amazing and simple steak I had there. I am pleased to say, 24 years later, that steak cooked perfectly is still there. Going with two other people for lunch we got there a little after the open. The place was already hopping but getting a table was thankfully easy. Cash or Debit only? I don't remember that but I understand. At least they take Debit instead of being cash only! Service is what you would expect in a high-end steak house to be. The ambiance is simple but elegant with wooden tables and enough space around them to navigate the place. A Caesar salad and, in this case, a steak for three. USDA Prime, family selected, dry-aged in their own drying box. The finishing touch upon paying the bill was getting the chocolate coins for a token dessert since we passed on something more filling.

I came here to celebrate my fiancé's birthday as this is a classic New York institution for steak. Make sure you make reservations a month ahead or you will be very limited with seating. We arrived half an hour early, so enjoyed two Old Fashioned ($18) while we waited for our table to be ready. The cocktails were nice and strong. Note that you need to close out your tab at the bar before getting seated. As soon as we sat down, they brought over the steak sauce, bread and butter for us already. We started off with an order of the Bacon ($8.95), which was actually perfect between the complimentary bread. The heat from the bacon also helped melt the butter drizzled with some steak sauce, which was the perfect combo together. For the entree, we got the Rib Steak for Two ($154.95) with Fries for 1 ($9.95) and Asparagus ($16.95). The steak comes out sizzling hot as they serve a few pre-cut pieces for you. Some of the steak was a bit fatty, but it was good and tender. The asparagus were thick and crunchy, which was a great balance with all the meat you're eating. Also, really enjoyed the fries that were super crispy too. We finished all the food, but we definitely stuffed. We couldn't end the meal without a dessert with their homemade schlong (whipped cream) though. We ordered the Apple Strudel ($14.95) with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream ($7.95). The ice cream was a needed pairing to the warm dessert. We probably couldn't done without the dessert, but it is great to share for the table. Overall, great classic steakhouse. The steak isn't anything more special any other in my opinion, but they're iconic to NY. Also, the service was wonderful and our server was personable. Note: Major credit cards not accepted, so bring CASH or debit card accepted!
